PUPILS at a school in Burghclere had fun when they dressed up as their favourite Roald Dahl characters.

Pupils from The Clere School, in Earlstone Common, dressed up as characters from the author’s most famous books to celebrate the author and raise money for Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity and Macmillan Cancer.

Prizes were awarded for the best dressed on the day as well as prizes for a range of material created during the week including Roald Dahl-inspired art, writing, science, maths and culinary delights.

One pupil who was a real winner on the day was 11-year-old Merryn Gilby. She was awar-ded first place for three pieces of Quentin Blake-inspired artwork, third place for her Willy Wonka outfit, as well as being a finalist in the Dahlesque writing competition.

For her efforts, Merryn won a “golden ticket” for a family of five to visit the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre, in Buckingham-shire.

The school has run a series of events over the past few weeks to celebrate the achievements of the famous children’s writer following the 50th anniversary of his book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Activities during the week included readings of Dahl’s best-known books, revolting recipes in food technology and chemistry lessons inspired by George’s Marvellous Medicine.

Jenifer Klepfer, learning resources manager and event organiser at the school, said: “Students and staff have had great fun and made an amazing effort, and we are delighted to have raised money for some very deserving charities.”
