A MAN, whose wife died a year after the birth of their son Union Jack, will raise cash for the Basingstoke hospice which provided care for her.

Kevin Smart is building a haunted house which he will open to the public between 4.30pm and 7pm on Friday, October 31, in aid of St Michael’s Hospice.

Kevin’s family hit the headlines when he and his wife Becky named their new-born child Union Jack in honour of The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in June 2012.

Tragically, Becky was diagnosed with incurable cancer of the liver and spine in September that year, and she died in June 2013, at the age of 39, leaving behind their three children.

Kevin, a baker, has created a haunted house in previous years, but this year he will collect money for St Michael’s Hospice, which supported his wife in her final days.

The haunted house will be sited outside his family’s address in Beckett Gardens, Bramley.

Among the attractions at the QPS Homes-sponsored event will be apple-bobbing, a pumpkin-carving competition and a selection of burgers and hotdogs available with donations to the hospice.

The pumpkin-carving competition is open to children aged under 16, and must be submitted to the event by 4pm on the day.

Pumpkins must have the entrant’s name, telephone number and address, and the winner will be announced by a representative of QPS Homes.
