A GRANDMOTHER celebrated an impressive milestone with friends and family last weekend.

Mabel Elsie Smith celebrated her 100th birthday at the Overton Memorial Institute, in London Road, Overton last Saturday.

The grandmother, who lives in Sapley Lane, Overton, received a birthday card from The Queen and also celebrated reaching the landmark age with a party of close friends and family.

The birthday girl was joined by her two sons – Albert, 69, and Steven, 59, her two daughters Greta, 74, and 80-year-old Jean and her 10 grandchildren.

Mabel was born on the Isle of Wight on October 9, 1914 before moving to Itchen Abbas with her family. It was here that she met her husband-to-be Albert.

The couple moved to Banbury, in Oxfordshire, when their eldest son, Albert, was around five before returning to Hampshire to live in Woodcott.

The family later settled in the village of Overton.

As well as looking after the four young children, Mabel also helped to pick crops on various farms and worked in the canteen at Portals, Laverstoke Mill.

Son Albert, who is known as Albie, told The Gazette: β€œShe loved the party and was chuffed about the card from The Queen.”
