MORE than 100 new homes and a community centre could be built in Beggarwood if plans are given the green light by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council.

Bellway Homes has applied to the borough council for full planning permission to build 58 new homes, 43 new flats, a new community centre and a takeaway on land off Beggarwood Lane, Basingstoke.

The developer has proposed a mix of 31 one-bedroom apartments, 12 two-bedroom apartments, four two-bedroom homes, 25 three-bedroom homes, 20 four-bedroom homes and nine five-bedroom homes.

According to the application, the proposed community centre and takeaway, which is proposed to be open between 11am and 11pm, Monday to Sunday, will be located within one of three apartment blocks planned at the development.

If approved by the borough council, 201 car parking spaces will be made available for the development.

The application states: “The application proposes a high-quality mixed-use scheme, comprising 101 new homes, a community hall and takeaway.

“The new homes will be made up of predominantly family housing with some apartments. A range of house sizes are proposed, ranging from one to five bedroom properties, with a maximum height of 2.5 storeys.

“One of the apartment blocks (block two) will contain the community hall and takeaway use on the ground floor. This block has been designed to complement the style and materials of the existing local centre on the opposite side of Beggarwood Lane, create a visual link between the new and existing development in order to support the vitality and viability of the existing/new centre.”

Councillor Terri Reid, ward member for Hatch Warren and Beggarwood, told The Gazette: “I would like to hear what residents think. We need a community centre in Beggarwood and we have been waiting a long time for that so clearly there is a need for a community centre.

“Whether this is the right place is something I would like to hear from residents about.”
