OFFICERS have made a fresh appeal for witnesses after a van driver knocked over a man on an M3 slip road at Basingstoke.

The victim, a man in his 60s, suffered serious leg injuries in the crash, which took place on the on-slip road for the northbound carriageway at junction 6, on Tuesday, September 16.

It happened after the drivers of a flat-bed van and VW Golf pulled on to the hard shoulder. Police said both drivers got out of their vehicles and exchanged words.

As the car driver went to get back in his vehicle, the van driver pulled out from behind him and clipped his legs, before carrying on along the M3.

Despite a high-profile appeal, police are still trying to track down the van driver, who they say might be unaware he hit the car driver.

Officers have now released a detailed description of the van.

PC Clyde Jerrard said: “The van is described as being similar in size to a Ford Transit flat bed but the cab was completely flat at the front and more square.

“It was plain white and had no distinctive markings or livery. The bed of the van was similar to that of a recovery truck with no sides on the bed and made of aluminium.

“The trailer was of the same appearance and material as the bed of the van but sat a couple of inches lower. It was a twin axle trailer with one mud guard over both wheels each side. The driver had to climb down from the cab from a height of approximately 4 foot.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact PC Jerrard at Whitchurch police station on 101 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
