THE NEWLY-appointed headteacher at The Costello School is hoping to build on its recent successes and lead it to an “outstanding” rating.

David Nicholson began his headship this term, taking over from Julia Mortimore, who left last December after 11 years of leading the school.

Mr Nicholson, who was previously headteacher at Abbeyfield School, in Chippenham, said he is “very excited” about his new role.

He added: “I knew in December last year that I had been chosen for the job, and I have been keeping a close eye on this school ever since.

“I have been really impressed by what I have seen. The pupils here are great – there is a real feeling here that learning, and doing well, is cool.

“I have made my expectations very clear in terms of traditional values, and I believe that good manners and mutual respect are very important.”

The school was rated as “good” in all categories by education watchdog Ofsted in May.

Mr Nicholson, who has been teaching for nearly two decades, said: “Costello is in a very healthy position, and I am grateful to my predecessor.

“I want to build on that, and for it to become an ‘outstanding’ school. I feel we are in a very good position to do that.”

The new head is gathering views from the staff, students and parents about how the school can improve.

He said: “It is very important to listen, and I think communication is key.”

Mr Nicholson will be holding “meet the headteacher” sessions which parents can attend over the coming months, and he will be sending out a newsletter every fortnight.

He said: “I feel honoured and privileged to have been entrusted with the position of headteacher at Costello, and I am greatly looking forward to helping to write the next chapter in the history of this wonderful place.”
