HUNDREDS of people enjoyed themselves at a Basingstoke event which pulled in the pounds for a good cause.

The Mayor of Basingstoke and Deane Councillor Roger Gardiner officially opened a family fun day to raise funds for Basingstoke-based charity Taking Steps.

Taking Steps is a charity that helps victims of domestic violence, providing one-to-one sessions as well as visiting children from families suffering domestic abuse at their schools.

And there was plenty of fun to be had at the event, which was held at the Popley Spotlight Centre, in Shakespeare Road.

Families were able to take part in a host of activities, including a bouncy castle and disco, and were also able to browse a number of stalls selling items such as jewellery and home-made cards.

In addition, those in attendance had the chance to have a look around a fire engine.

Live entertainment at the event was provided by 2013 Britain’s Got Talent entrant Jaden Cornelious and dance performances from youngsters from Spotlight UK.

Gerrie Jordan, chief executive of the charity, said: “Everyone seemed to enjoy it because we spread it over the day.

“Jaden was brilliant. We have asked him to become our patron, which he has accepted, so we will be doing some more things together.

“It was lovely to see people there getting their faces painted and enjoying themselves.

“The money raised will be a great help to the work we do.”
