A TEAM of employees from a Basingstoke supermarket pulled in the pounds for a good cause by piling on the pedal power.

Around 100 members of staff from Morrisons, in Worting Road, Basingstoke, got on the saddle at the front of the store to raise some much-needed cash for national charity Sue Ryder, which provides compassionate care to people with end-of-life and long-term needs.

The two-day fundraiser was part of a company fundraising mission across the south-west region to cycle 24,902 miles – the distance round the world – with each store required to cycle 223 miles.

Two static bikes needed for the fundraiser were donated by Fitness First, in Chineham.

To get customers in the spirit, staff chose a Peruvian theme and members of the team dressed up in bright coloured outfits to encourage customers to donate cash.

In addition, a “guess the name of the teddy bear” and “how many sweets in the jar?” competition pulled in extra cash for the charity.

Store manager Ian Foster told The Extra: “It is great that we are doing this, and everyone has been keen to help us.”

Samantha Steadman, from Sue Ryder, said: “We are very grateful for the support of Morrisons colleagues and customers.

“The money raised will support vital Sue Ryder healthcare services which will make a huge difference to thousands of families at the most difficult time of their lives.”
