TEENAGERS from schools in the borough have taken part in a Time Team-style dig in North Warnborough.

Around 40 pupils from schools in Basingstoke carried out a two-day dig which was organised by the University of Cambridge.

A total of nine pupils took part from Fort Hill Community School, in Kenilworth Road, Winklebury, Basingstoke, 11 pupils from Robert May’s School, in West Street, Odiham, 10 pupils from The Costello School, in Crossborough Hill, Basingstoke, and 10 pupils from Cranbourne Business and Enterprise College, in Wessex Close, Basingstoke.

The project is part of the Higher Education Field Academy programme which is run by the university to boost children’s confidence and inspire them to carry on into further education.

Carenza Lewis, University of Cambridge senior research associate and lecturer and Time Team presenter, helped pupils to sift through exciting finds which included Roman pottery and discarded horns.

A total of 10 trenches were dug in the village and students from each school were mixed together and were accompanied by a team supervisor.

Carenza also unveiled how the evidence and understanding of life in North Warnborough is developing as a result of the work done over the last two years by students.

Pat Humberstone, able and talented co-ordinator at Fort Hill Community School, said: “It is a challenging but amazing opportunity for the youth of our area.

“The final part of the project gave the students a month to write up their report following the university guidelines before submitting it to the university for assessment and formal feedback.”
