LATE-night travellers in Basingstoke will be able to jump on board a new evening bus from next month.

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, in partnership with bus provider Stagecoach, is launching a pilot evening bus service which will run until 11.30pm on Fridays and Saturdays for the next nine months.

From August 1, residents and visitors will be able to travel on five different routes to and from the town centre, including to Brighton Hill, Baughurst via Tadley and Sherborne St John, Kempshott Park and a route travelling to Winklebury, Popley and Chineham.

A “night rider” ticket for the service will cost £2 and £2.90 for people who want to travel to Tadley and Baughurst, which is a £1 saving on the daytime fare.

Councillor Cathy Osselton, cabinet member for partnerships at the borough council, said: “I am delighted to see the launch of the pilot evening bus service in the borough.

“The council has listened to the feedback from local people which showed there was a real need for late night public transport. We have worked hard with Stagecoach to ensure that this pilot meets their needs.

“I hope the service will be successfully received and well-used for the next nine months. This will allow us to make an informed decision about the future bus services we provide.”

Andrew Dyer, managing director of Stagecoach South, added: “This is a great example of partnership working between public and private sectors.

“I am delighted that we have been able to join with Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council to deliver this exciting pilot scheme which I am sure will be welcomed by many in the local community.”
