WHITCHURCH is set to mark the anniversary of the First World War by hosting two events to commemorate 100 years since the outbreak of the conflict.

On August 2, the Mayor and Mayoress of Whitchurch will open an exhibition at Whitchurch Town Hall to showcase artefacts relating to the conflict, including a display of information on each of the 64 men who are commemorated on the town’s war memorial.

A candlelit vigil and a short service will also be held two days later, at 10.15pm on August 4 at the town hall as part of the Royal British Legion’s “lights out” event to mark the exact time that war was declared on August 4, 1914.

The public are invited to attend the two events.
