IT’S time for Basingstoke Festival 2014! Hundreds of events will take place over the borough between June 20 and July 13. Here, we take a closer look at some of what’s in store in week one.
Les Cubitenistes: The Museum of Everyday Life June 20-22
FRENCH street theatre artists Les Cubitenistes will be turning members of the public into bespoke real-life pieces of art, using a combination of performance, art and photography outside The Willis Museum.
As the event progresses over the three days, whacky colourful frames, props and scenery will be made by members of the community and an exhibition of the captured work will be displayed in town, all leading to a finale on day three!

Dream Weavers by Joanna Rose Tidey Whitchurch Silk Mill June 20 – July 13
VISUAL artist Joanna primarily works with living organisms.
In her first solo show, Dream Weavers will be showcasing new and existing installations which discuss the sacrifice placed upon the silkworm for mankind.
All silkworms and moths used in Tidey’s installations and sculptures are lovingly and ethically hatched and reared by the artist in her studio. All the silkworms get to live out their full life cycle, giving the audience a chance to see the silkworm’s magnificence in its entirety.

Paper Cutting Workshop Basing House June 21
WORK with artist Eileen White to explore different ways of working with paper in response to the stunning objects and grounds on show at Basing House.
The workshop will be based on quick drawings made in response to the museum exhibits. Eileen will then demonstrate how your drawings can be turned into unique hand cut graphic paper silhouettes.
All materials provided, and beginners are welcome. Workshop is five hours with an hour for lunch.
Tudor Weekend The Vyne June 21-22
VISIT The Vyne to learn all about our Tudor history. There’s a chance to meet King Henry VIII (re-enactor John White) and Anne Boleyn, and listen to Tudor band Waytes and Measures in the grounds.
Try your hand at some traditional archery and treat yourself to a hog roast (Sunday only) and a pint of local beer.
Myths and Legends of World War One Basingstoke Discovery Centre Monday, June 23, 2pm-3pm
FROM the Angel of Mons to the sealed cargo on the torpedoed liner Lusitania, from the secret evidence in the Nurse Edith Cavell trial to the haunted U-boat, the First World War was a hotbed of mysteries and myths.
In this talk, we are taken back to original sources to unearth obscure government records kept secret for decades.
