HUNDREDS of people turned out for a day of fun at a community event in Basingstoke.

The family fun day at the Aldworth School, in Western Way, South Ham, saw the local community come together to enjoy music and entertainment.

Visitors were treated to music from DJ Mark Halliday and entertainment from various groups that use the school, including the JG Dance group, the Basingstoke Wolverines cheerleading group and Aldworth pupil Paul Smith who delivered a performance on a saxophone and clarinet.

Among the other delights on offer was a range of stalls selling everything from jewellery and soaps to cushions and pictures as well as tombola stalls and food tents selling refreshments including tea, coffee, hamburgers and hot dogs.

Among the attractions was a petting zoo with animals including a donkey, lambs, chickens and rabbits from the Mill Cottage Farm Experience, and a stall for children to have their face painted.

A car boot sale was also set up for residents looking to pick up a bargain away from the thrills and spills of the fair.

Local organisations, including the Basingstoke West Scout group, Basingstoke Mencap and Basingstoke Voluntary Services, used the event to set up stalls to raise awareness of the services and support they offer.

Doreen Crowther, the lettings organiser at Aldworth School, told The Gazette: “It was a nice, relaxing day and at no cost – it was a great family day out.

“I think it was really successful, and everyone enjoyed it.”
