A NEW 20mph speed limit on a North Warnborough road has had a “pretty limited effect” on speeding motorists.

Alex Homan spoke about ongoing problems in North Warnborough Street despite Hampshire County Council reducing the speed limit on the road from 30mph to 20mph earlier this year.

The 20mph zone covers the road from its junction with West Street to near the Tunnel Lane junction, and also covers Adams Close and Laurel Close.

Mr Homan asked members of Odiham Parish Council for the street to be included in a new speed indicator device scheme.

As previously reported in The Gazette, the parish council agreed to buy a device to alert drivers to speed limits in Odiham and North Warnborough, and to analyse traffic speeds.

Mr Homan said: “It’s not much more than a narrow country road and in residential areas south of The Anchor Inn, it’s only one car wide and there’s no pavement.

“The recent 20mph signs and road painting have had limited effect and we would like to ask that the street is included as one of the sites.”

Residents in North Warnborough Street have long complained about speeding traffic and of heavy goods vehicles damaging cars and building along the narrow road.

Councillor Richard Harris, chairman of the traffic and transport committee, said he would consider the road as a site for the device, and added he had spoken to two companies between the village and Basingstoke about their lorries not using the road.

But Cllr Mike O’Neill said: “Quite honestly, there have never been any accidents down there and it’s got a self-regulating system with all the parked cars. It might seem fast, but I walk down there three times a day.”
