AN ODIHAM man will drive 3,000 miles across Europe to raise money for former British servicemen.

Paul Spencer, of Rye Common, will drive his Jaguar XKR with his former neighbour Matthew Denton as part of the Rally for Heroes, starting on June 27.

Taking place over eight days, around 50 cars will travel through 11 countries, including Austria, Belgium, Germany and Switzerland.

The duo will traverse several mountains, including the infamous Stelvio pass on the Italy/Switzerland border, which has around 60 hairpin bends.

Mr Spencer, 64, said: “It can really test your driving skills. Talking to some of the other entrants, several of them are not just ordinary bog-standard drivers. I am just average really, but I’m looking forward to it.”

Those taking part will start from Dunsfold Airfield, in Surrey, which is the home of the BBC programme Top Gear, and finish at Waltham Abbey, in Essex.

On the itinerary is a behind-the-scenes trip to the Bavarian Alps and the Kehlsteinhaus – better known as the Eagle’s Nest, Adolf Hitler’s mountain retreat.

It is hoped that the trip will raise £100,000 for the Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen’s Families Association, the UK’s oldest military charity.
