A SCHEME to reduce the speed of traffic through Whitchurch has been labelled a “disaster” by a borough councillor.

Whitchurch borough councillor Keith Watts believes the Hampshire County Council project, in which the speed limit has been reduced to 20mph through part of the town, should have been extended to include a “dangerous bend.”

The signs were installed in Whitchurch last week, after the pilot scheme was approved almost a year ago.

Whitchurch is one of 11 areas in Hampshire chosen to pilot Residential 20.

But Cllr Watts believes the 20mph limit should not end just before the bend in Church Street.

He said it was “crazy” to install the signs before the bend, particularly because there are houses around the corner.

He added: “I have issued a leaflet and posted a message on my website and Face-book, advising people with questions or complaints to phone Hampshire Highways enquiry line.”
