A MAN has been jailed for ten years for killing a Basingstoke grandad.

Jurors at Winchester Crown Court this afternoon found William Smith guilty of the manslaughter of Stephan Hollow, by a majority verdict of 11 to one.

Mr Hollow, a 53-year-old grandfather-of-eight, was found outside his house in Blackdown Close, Buckskin, on August 19 last year, with five stab wounds. One wound had pierced a major blood vessel in his heart.

After more than 14 hours of deliberation, the jury found Smith not guilty of murder but guilty of manslaughter.

Mr Justice Burton said he was satisfied that Smith had not brought a knife to the house when he went to confront his ex-girlfriend Megan Hards and her new boyfriend Tyler Hollow, the 22-year-old son of Stephan Hollow.

But he said Smith had lost self-control when provoked by Tyler Hollow, took a knife from him, and stabbed Stephan Hollow, who had been trying to move him from the garden.

The judge said: "Having got the knife you did not control yourself in that you turned on Stephan Hollow, who was completely unarmed, and stabbed him to death.

"The jury found that you did not show self-defence and that in fact you lost your control and have killed an innocent man."

Smith, 28, of Pershore Road, Popley, was also found not guilty of wounding with intent, as well as an alternative charge of unlawful wounding, on Tyler Hollow.
