CUB Scouts listened in awe to a Basingstoke adventurer who cycled around the world unaided.

James Ketchell, who is an ambassador for Hampshire Scouts, visited 1st Basingstoke Cubs after returning from his final mission in a global triathlon.

The 31-year-old, from Eastrop, has rowed 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean solo, climbed to the summit of Mount Everest and cycled 18,000 miles around the world.

In conjunction with Hampshire Scouts, James has created a range of challenges for member of the Scouting movement to complete to achieve a special Ambassador Challenge badge, to commemorate his ultimate triathlon.

The 1st Basingstoke Cubs have already achieved this award and invited James to talk to them about his cycling challenge on his return to the UK.

James visited the Cubs, who meet in Sarum Hill, and gave a presentation to them on his three challenges, the latest of which raised £4,000 for the ELIFAR Foundation - a charity which aims to improve the quality of life for disabled children and young adults.

Naomi Bailey, Cub leader, said: “The Cubs were enthralled with the adventures and asked many questions about the different adventures. James looked at the map the Cubs had used to track his progress during the cycle challenge and the many tweets they sent James.”
