PRE-school children at The Oak Tree Nursery in Whitchurch got close to nature during the launch of Forest School sessions.

The sessions have been added to the nursery’s curriculum. They are led by local Forest School teacher Lizzie Banks and are held outside and emphasise hands-on experience and developing children’s independence and self-esteem.

Children wrap up warm to suit the weather and spend the session digging, climbing, hunting for bugs and generally exploring.

They are taught to understand more about the environment and to respect it, and to stay safe.

Jenny Forsythe, a manager from The Oak Tree Nursery, said: “At The Oak Tree, we are always interested in seeking out new ideas to help us enhance our curriculum.

“The Forest School movement started in Scandinavia and, with its outdoors ethos and commitment to helping children learn about responsibility and self-reliance, we felt it really fitted well with our own ideals.

“The children love it and we can see the benefit in developing confidence and teamwork.”
