WORK to repave Basingstoke’s Top of The Town is due to finish on Monday.
Hampshire County Council (HCC) began the £280,000 project in Market Place last October and had hoped it would be complete by the end of March this year.
HCC previously told The Gazette that the work was only delayed by a week because of bad weather, and would be complete by the week beginning April 7.
But the site is still cordoned off this week.
Diana Leahy, a spokeswoman for HCC, told The Gazette today that Market Place will be complete by April 28, having been further delayed by “weather related issues.”
She added: “The county council would like to thank businesses, residents and visitors for their patience while these works have been carried out and hopes that the new improved square will have a positive impact on the town centre.”
The project is part of the council’s Operation Resilience programme, which aims to strengthen Hampshire’s roads and pavements to make them more resilient and keep them in good condition for longer.
It has involved taking up the old paving in Market Place, reconstructing the base and laying new slabs.
The old paving will be recycled or reused where possible.
