DO you feel you were the victim of a press witch-hunt? That was the question put to Maria Miller on Tuesday by The Gazette after the MP sent in her latest “How I See It” column.

In the column, Mrs Miller wrote said: “As a Government Minister, the Prime Minister asked me to handle difficult Government reforms, including equal marriage.

“But, of course, implementing the recommendations made by Lord Justice Leveson on the future of media regulation, following the phone hacking scandals, would always be controversial for the press.”

When The Gazette’s political reporter Jessica Bave requested a telephone interview to clarify why Mrs Miller had made the reference to the Leveson Report and press regulation issue, she was told that the MP was not available.

Instead, Tim Smith, from the Conservative Party’s press office, who has been assigned to deal with the MP’s press enquiries, said: “I can’t see what clarification is needed.

“I think she is talking about the reforms which were absolutely central to her role as Culture Secretary.”
