A LOCAL campaigner is making a bid to become Basingstoke’s next MP.

Janice Spalding has been selected as the Liberal Democrats candidate to stand against Basingstoke MP Maria Miller at the next General Election in May 2015.

The IT project manager has worked in the defence, utilities and oil and gas industries.

She has lived in Bramley for the last 14 years and is an active player with Basingstoke Hockey Club.

The prospective parliamentary candidate is passionate about investing in education and training for young people, particularly in subjects such as engineering.

As part of her campaign, she is aiming to propose increased investment in green energy including solar and hydro-electric and energy from waste and wind power.

She said: “Liberal Democrats in Government have been leading from the front – investing in apprenticeships for our young people and promoting green growth – both vital for creating a stronger economy.”

John Shaw, chair of the Basingstoke Liberal Democrats group, said: “I’m absolutely delighted to have Janice as our prospective parliamentary candidate.

“In Basingstoke it’s the Liberal Democrats who are the main challengers to the Conservatives at the next General Election. Janice’s background in business and technology and real world experience make her the perfect person to be our next MP.”
