People in Basingstoke are being urged to donate furniture and white goods to help flood victims whose possessions have been lost or damaged.

Fifty-eight homes have now been evacuated in Sperrin Close, Antrim Close, Bodmin Close, Exmoor Close, Quantock Close and Prescelly Close with 36 of the properties belonging to Sovereign Housing Association.

The Community Furniture Project (CPF) and Sovereign Housing Association are asking residents to take their donations to the CFP’s depot on Joule Road in Houndmills.

The CPF will be updating their website regularly to let people know the items that are required and the project has been actively working with residents whose homes are threatened by floodwater in an effort to save their furniture.

Sovereign are helping residents affected by the floods, finding alternative accommodation for those who have had to evacuate their homes, especially vulnerable residents. A team from the housing association are on hand at the Ridgeway Centre to keep residents informed about the latest situation.

Chief executive of the CFP, Kelvin Hughes said: “We’re asking people to take unwanted furniture and white goods directly to the depot to free up our vehicles to continue with their efforts to save the furniture of those people threatened by the floods.”

Sovereign’s community investment coordinator, Lee Dillon added: “Many people in Buckskin – both Sovereign and private residents – have seen their households belongings ruined by the flood waters.

“We’re hoping to mobilise the people of Basingstoke to donate generously so we can help to meet the basic requirements of affected residents who are moving into unfurnished temporary accommodation.”
