MORE than 200 homes in the rural areas of Basingstoke are still without power following the storms on Friday night.

Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) engineers worked throughout the night to continue to restore power to affected customers. The company said that in some areas, engineers were unable to gain access because of ongoing issues with flooding.

There are currently 204 customers without power in the Basingstoke area, but SSE said it expects to restore power to these homes today.

Yesterday, Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council concentrated on assessing the situation in flooding hotspots in the borough where there have been issues or concerns over the last few days.

Officers visited The Candovers, Hurstbourne Priors, Overton, Whitchurch, Sherborne St John, St Mary Bourne and sewage treatment works at Upton Grey.

No rising levels have been reported at this stage.

The Met Office is forecasting more wet weather this week, however there is no predicted severe weather or storms.

The borough council said: “The problem is that it will take a while for the heavy rainfall from Friday to work down to the rivers and groundwater so this is likely to cause more flooding early this week and we are preparing for that.”

Preparation includes replenishing sandbags.

There were no further evacuations in the Buckskin area on Sunday, and council staff are still working at the Ridgeway Centre to offer advice.

On Friday night, the storms brought down a tree in St Thomas’ Church, Worting Road.
