MYSTERY surrounds the death of a woman whose body was found on a balcony of a landmark Basingstoke tower block.

A member of the public made the gruesome discovery at the 13-storey Crown Heights complex at 8.45am on Monday.

The dead woman is believed to be aged between 30 and 50, and of oriental appearance. A post-mortem carried out on Tuesday found the cause of death to be multiple injuries.

Three days on from the death, detectives have still been unable, or unwilling, to confirm to The Gazette whether the woman fell to her death. They are treating the death as “unexplained”.

The investigation is looking at how her body came to be on the balcony on the fifth floor, and officers carried out door-to-door enquiries on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Detectives are particularly keen to speak to anyone who saw or heard anything unusual at the flats between 9pm on Sunday and 9am on Monday.

As reported on The Gazette website, the police closed Churchill Way on Monday morning while they recovered the woman’s body and began their investigation.

Also called to the scene were 14 firefighters from Basingstoke fire station and an ambulance and a hazardous area response team from South Central Ambulance Service. The area was reopened at noon on Monday.

Manrupa Gurung, 49, who lives in Crown Heights with her husband and two children, said: “When I came home from work, there were so many police cars here.

“They say a woman’s body had fallen from above the balcony.”

Anyone with information can contact police on 101, quoting Operation Astute.
