IT MAY be a place to be proud of, but Basingstoke has been named as one of the least romantic destinations in the UK.

The town came sixth in a list of least romantic destinations, gaining five per cent of the total votes cast by more than 2,000 people who took part in the hotels.com survey.

It is the first time Basingstoke has been included in the annual survey, which started last year.

Slough in Berkshire was the least romantic destination, followed by Birmingham, Scunthorpe, Hull and Bradford.

London, Crewe, Stockton-on-Tees and Blackpool made up the top 10.

The most romantic place was the Lake District.

Other popular destinations included Cornwall, the Cotswolds, Edinburgh and the Isle of Wight.

Kate Hopcraft, from hotels.com, said: “While many people have pre-conceived notions of what a romantic destination should be, we’d encourage the public to readdress. Romance can sometimes be found in the most unlikely of places.”
