A FLOOD warning has been issued by the Environment Agency for Whitchurch and Overton.

The warning covers the River Test, which is continuing to rise slowly.

The Environment Agency has warned that flooding is expected and is urging people to take ‘immediate action’.

The alert states: “High river levels are compounded by rising groundwater levels in the area.”

The Met Office forecast a maximum of 30mm of rainfall today, with further rainfall forecast for the rest of the week, which will cause the river levels to rise further.

A flood warning has also been issued in The Candovers and St Mary Bourne, which have both been supplied sandbags by the borough council.

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council advises people whose homes are threatened with flooding to get ready in case they need to be evacuated.

Steps that can be taken are:

  • Move furniture and valuable items upstairs
  • Pack bags with clothes and other supplies, for example medication and nappies
  • Get important documents such as passports and driving licences together
  • Call family and friends to arrange a place to stay if possible
  • Make arrangements for pets to stay with friends or family if possible
  • Turn off electricity when leaving the house
  • If you have a disability and need help to evacuate call 01256 844844

An update on the flood warning in Whitchurch and Overton will be given by the Environment Agency later today.
