MORE than half of secondary schools in The Gazette area were below the national average in last year’s GCSE results.

The league tables, published today, show that across all of England’s state-funded schools, 60.6 per cent achieved five or more GCSEs between A* and C, including English and maths.

Seven of the 12 schools in the borough were below this figure for the GCSEs taken by pupils last summer.

The Government deems schools to be below target if fewer than 40 per cent of pupils meet this benchmark.

Just one school in The Gazette area fell into this category – The Vyne Community School, in Vyne Road, South View.

Here, 35 per cent of pupils managed to achieve five GCSEs between A* and C, including English and maths.

This was compared to 44 per cent the previous year.

Fort Hill Community School, in Kenilworth Road, Winklebury, just scraped over the Government benchmark with 42 per cent – the same as the previous year.

There was a marked improvement at Cranbourne Business and Enterprise College, in Wessex Close, where 66 per cent of pupils hit the Government target, compared with 43 per cent the previous year.

However, The Costello School dropped considerably for the 2013 GCSE results, with 58 per cent of pupils achieving five GCSEs between A* and C, including English and maths, compared with 72 per cent in 2012.

The best school in The Gazette area was Bishop Challoner Catholic Secondary School, where 78 per cent of students hit the Government benchmark.

This was a rise of 10 per cent from its 2012 results.

The league tables also show the number of pupils who manage to obtain the English Baccalaureate – which shows those who achieve A* to C grades in English, maths, science, a language and humanities subject.

At Robert May’s School, in Odiham, 44 per cent of pupils achieved the English Baccalaureate, compared to just 22.8 per cent of pupils at all state funded schools in England.

Testbourne Community School, in Whitchurch, achieved 40 per cent.

Everest Community Academy, in Oxford Way, Popley, was the worst performing school in the borough for the English Baccalaureate, with just three per cent of pupils achieving this.
