VICTIMS of the Holocaust and other more recent acts of genocide are to be remembered in Basingstoke.
A wreath-laying ceremony will be held at the War Memorial on January 27, to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.
The Mayor of Basingstoke and Deane Cllr Dan Putty will attend the service at 10am, alongside Tony Curtis, the chief executive of the borough council, who will lay a wreath at the memorial on behalf of the borough.
A bugler will signal the observance of a two-minute silence.
The day, commemorated world-wide since 2000, marks the anniversary of the 1945 liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp.
Cllr Putty said: “On Holocaust Memorial Day we can pause for a while and remember the millions of people who have been murdered or whose lives have been changed beyond recognition during the Holocaust and in subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.
“On this poignant anniversary we honour the survivors and remember the lessons of their experiences.”
Members of the public are welcome to attend the ceremony.
