THE future of Basingstoke’s only nightclub remains in doubt after it did not open over the weekend.

As reported in The Gazette last week, Wonderland closed its doors on the weekend of Friday, January 3, and Saturday, January 4.

The nightclub, in Churchill Way, said on its Facebook page that it closed “due to the days that Christmas and New Year’s Eve fell” and that it would reopen last Friday for its DIRTEE POP event.

But the club did not open on that night or for the whole of the weekend.

One user, Jonathan Bristow, wrote on the club’s Facebook page on Sunday: “Still no official word? Shows how much they cared about their customers.”

No Saints Ltd, the parent company of Wonderland, did not return calls made by The Gazette this week about the prolonged closure.

Last week, people were seen taking stock and sound equipment out of the nightclub, and removing the club’s sign from above its front doors.

The locks on the nightclub’s doors have now been changed. Steven Connolly, centre director of Festival Place, which owns the building occupied by Wonderland, confirmed it did not trade over the weekend. He added that he had still not heard from No Saints Ltd about Wonderland’s future.

Meanwhile, bosses at another nightspot Tonic, in London Street, said on its Facebook page that it was increasing its age of entry from 18 to 21, following the lack of activity at Wonderland.

On Tuesday, January 7, Tonic stated: “In order to maintain our high standards here @ Tonic, with the recent closure of another venue in town, we are raising our age of entry to 21.

“All our regular clientele who may be under 21 will only be allowed entry at our discretion.”

This led to criticism from some customers, while others were supportive.

Carol Freeman, owner of Tonic, told The Gazette: “It’s not really a change. We do the Challenge 21 and 25 (schemes to prevent young people buying alcohol) any way. We do have 18-year-olds here, and it is just up to our discretion.”
