HEAVY rain has flooded roads in and around Basingstoke today – as a motorist found out the hard way.

This picture, submitted by Gazette reader Tony Tuck, shows a BMW car stuck in flood water this afternoon under the railway bridge in Milkingpen Lane, Old Basing.

The road has now been closed to allow the water to be drained.

Mr Tuck said it was the third time since Christmas that a car has been abandoned in floodwater under the bridge.

Rain overnight and during the day has left many roads in the borough with flooded areas, including in Pinkerton Road, South Ham, Monk Sherborne Road, Monk Sherborne and Pelton Road, Houndmills.

A flood alert remains in place for streams to the north of the borough, including Bishopswood Stream in Tadley and the River Enborne at Aldermaston.

The Environment Agency has also issued a flood alert for the River Whitewater, by North Warnborough and Hook, and the River Hart, by Hartley Wintney, although it said no property flooding is expected.
