A CANDLELIGHT concert in Newnham raised thousands of pounds for a local charity.

The event, held in St Nicholas’ Church, featured musical performances, a sing-along, a fireworks display and some good food.

The concert, which was organised by Clive Pinder and June James, was held to raise money for the Ark Cancer Centre Charity, which is aiming to raise £5million towards a new cancer centre which will be built in north Hampshire.

Singers Andy Clutterbuck and James Hatcher entertained the guests gathered in the church with renditions of well-known classics, along with local singer-songwriter Chris James.

Guests were then treated to a fireworks display on the green, before walking to the Old House at Home, in Newnham Green, for a sit-down dinner.

The evening was topped off with goody bags for all who attended, supplied by Newlyns Farm Shop and Moutan Florist.

Mrs James, who was thrilled the event had gone so well, said: “It was a fabulous evening, enjoyed by all and we were absolutely delighted to raise £2,500 for the Ark Cancer Centre Charity.”

Consultant surgeon Mr Merv Rees, who is leading The Ark Cancer Charity fundraising campaign, and Sandra Fell, a trustee of the charity, were among the guests.

Ms Fell said: “The church looked stunning, lit up by candles and fairy lights. The event was arranged to perfection and we thoroughly enjoyed being a part of it.”
