FIREFIGHTERS hit the right note with shoppers as they collected food to help the homeless.

Crews from Basingstoke fire station sang Christmas carols at three different supermarkets – and shoppers responded by donating food and cash.

The food, which included boxes of cereal and sweets and cans of soup, was dropped off by the fire crews at May Place hostel in Basingstoke’s Top of The Town.

The firefighters also collected £4,065.61 for The Fire Fighters Charity, which supports serving and retired firefighters and their families.

Chris Mernin, station administrator, said: “We got masses of food, and the public were fantastic. People put tins and all sorts of stuff in for the collection.”

The crews visited Asda, in Brighton Way, Brighton Hill, Morrisons, in Worting Road, and Sainsburys, in Wallop Drive, Hatch Warren.
