A BASINGSTOKE teenager had a royal day to remember when he got to see The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh.

Royal Marines Cadet Sergeant Adam Knowles, who lives in Winchester Road, was given the task of helping to greet the royal arrivals at Windsor Castle on November 29, opening and closing doors for the couple.

The Queen was in Windsor to unveil a set of stain glassed windows, commemorating her Diamond Jubilee, at Windsor Guildhall.

The event marked a new phase in the cadet’s life after Adam was promoted to be one of the Lord-Lieutenant’s four cadets in September.

Adam has been a cadet for three years and is currently a Section Commander in the Royal Marines CCF Troop at Bradfield College in Berkshire, where he studies.

The 16-year-old has attended the college since he was 13 and was nominated for his new role by the Commander-in-Chief of the cadet force.

As part of his duties, Adam will accompany Berkshire Lord-Lieutenant Mary Bayliss to civil and ceremonial events throughout the county.

Adam’s mum Karen Whittaker told The Gazette: “I am just very proud. He has worked tremendously hard and has achieved a lot.

“He always makes me very proud and always tries his hardest in everything he does.

“He worked hard to get promoted to the position, and it is a great opportunity. He said to me that it was the best thing that he has done in his life.”
