PUPILS and teachers at a Basingstoke junior school took part in a national charity event to raise money for vulnerable children.

Youngsters at South View Junior School, in Shooters Way, South View, marked the NSPCC’s Number Day 2013 by dressing up as digits.

The day is a national schools fundraising event for children of all ages, which has raised more than £1.1 million towards the NSPCC’s work with vulnerable children in the UK, since launching in 2000.

Its aim is to make maths fun as well as raise money to protect children in need, including through the NSPCC’s 24-hour helpline, Childline.

On Tuesday, children and teachers at South View made a donation to the NSPCC in return for coming to school wearing an item of clothing with a number on it. They also took part in maths challenges designed by Oxford University Press.

Sheila Pape, headteacher at the school, said: “The Number Day teaching and fundraising materials helped us to deliver interactive and engaging maths lessons while having fun and raising money for a good cause.

“I’d encourage other primary and secondary schools in Basingstoke to put on their thinking caps and take part to support the vital work of the NSPCC.”
