THE grieving mother of a young man, who was found hanged in a Basingstoke park, told an inquest how she found three suicide notes on her son’s bed.

A dog walker found the body of Scott Warriner in woodland at the Popley Community Park, in Popley Way, Popley, around 11.45am on Saturday, October 12.

The 21-year-old, of Baynard Close, Oakridge, was a former Queen Mary’s College pupil and was studying to become a personal trainer.

His mother Sandra Maudsley told an inquest at Alton Magistrates’ Court that her son told her he was going to meet a friend on the night before his body was found.

The following morning, she went into his bedroom to collect clothes for laundry and found the three notes on his bed.

The inquest heard she then called his mobile phone at the time police officers were helping to recover his body.

She said: “Nobody had any idea he was going to do something like this. He hid it very well. Even his friends had no idea.”

Miss Maudsley added she did not think her son was depressed about a recent split with a girlfriend, his relationship with his father or the death of his grandfather four years ago.

Recording a verdict of suicide, Andrew Bradley, coroner for North East Hampshire, said: “He was physically well, certainly with no record of depressive illness. It is right out of the blue.

“It is quite clear that he is suffering some kind of reactive depression. Whatever it is, it is playing with his mind and he is not handling it.”
