THEY’VE been going bonkers about conkers in a north Hampshire village.
Conker fun was had by schoolchildren and residents in Cliddesden at two competitions organised in the village.
The horse chestnut seeds were used by pupils from Cliddesden Primary School in its annual conker competition, held as part of a maths week.
Hazel Baker, admin officer at the school, said children worked out how the competition was run, using their maths skills to figure out how to end up with two in the final.
She said: “The whole school took part. The children loved it. It was very loud and raucous.”
Another conker contest was held for villagers in Station Road, on November 23, organised by local residents.
Around 60 people took part in the knock-out competition, battling against each other to win a trophy.
Roy Broadley, 57, a kite maker, helped to organise the event for the first time, and hopes it will now become an annual competition in Cliddesden.
He said: “We did it to raise money for Naomi House Children’s Hospice, and we made about £400.”
Jane French was declared the winner in the adult category, while 10-year-old Alec Barlow was victorious in the junior category.
