NINE schools in Basingstoke have signed up to an annual initiative to raise awareness of saving energy at school and at home.

Switch-off Fortnight, from November 18 to December 1, is run by EDF Energy’s award-winning education programme The Pod, and encourages schools to reduce their energy consumption and inspire people to adopt energy saving habits.

Schools that have signed up in the Basingstoke area are Old Basing Infant School, Four Lanes Infant School, Rucstall Primary School, Chiltern Primary School, Overton CE Primary School, Tadley Community Primary School, South View Junior School, The Vyne Community School and Aldworth School.

Pupils are encouraged to involve their families by assessing energy wastage in their home, such as leaving appliances on standby and not switching off lights.

They will also be asked to talk with their family about why saving energy is important and how it can save them money.

Robyn Thorn, EDF Energy’s education programme manager, said: “This year Switch-off Fortnight enters its fifth year.

“It has raised awareness of energy issues within schools and local communities all over the UK.”

Schools involved in the campaign are sent free Switch-off Fortnight campaign packs which include posters, stickers and badges.
