"HOW we care for older residents, particularly those with dementia, is a priority in Basingstoke given our rapidly ageing population.

This is why Hampshire County Council has invested in extending the Oakridge care home and also building the new Extra Care home, in Brighton Hill.

The future of Deeside care home is causing concern. Back in August, I met senior officials from Hampshire County Council to understand how residents and their families were being supported.

It is my belief that if Deeside was to close, it should be kept open for as long as possible and should not close until the new Oakridge extension is in full operation; that staff should move with residents; and that there should be financial reassurance to give relatives peace of mind that the costs being covered by the local authority now will continue to be covered in the future.

The future of Deeside is a decision for the local county council, not MPs in Parliament. As Basingstoke’s MP, I believe the best role I can play is taking my constituents’ concerns directly to those who are making the decisions."
