ELECTRIC-powered taxis could soon be a common sight in Basingstoke if the borough council approves a proposed change to its licensing rules.
Strict leg room specifications for private hire vehicles prevent battery-powered cars - like the Nissan Leaf - being used by taxi drivers in the borough because its passenger leg room is two inches short of the minimum requirement.
Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council's licensing committee will decide on Wednesday next week to reduce the minimum leg room from 30 inches to 28 inches.
The move would pave the way for more hybrid and battery-powered taxis in Basingstoke.
Linda Cannon, borough council licensing manager, recommended the committee approves the change.
She said: “Two licensing officers who are both just under six feet tall, have tested the vehicle and are of the opinion the car offers a reasonable level of comfort.”
