Brave women stage rescue from burning house
TWO brave women forced their way into a burning building to rescue a woman after she allegedly set fire to her own home.
Lisa Robertson and her friend Debbie Burge, along with two men, managed to carry unconscious Sharon Lock out of the smoke-logged house, in Oakridge, Basingstoke, last Sunday night.
Miss Robertson, 27, who was wearing pyjamas at the time, used a garden fork to smash open a front window to get inside the house.
The mother-of-four was standing outside her house in Bay Tree Way, Oakridge, with her friend Debbie, when she heard a fire alarm sound at 8.30pm in the row of houses where she lives.
She said: “We could see the fire through the kitchen window. I picked up a garden fork and I smashed the front window.
“I went through the window and unlocked the front door and Debbie went in the kitchen. I put out the fire in the hallway and then went upstairs and helped to pull the woman out.”
By the time Miss Robertson reached upstairs, two other helpers, who the women know only as Lee and Danny, had also entered the building by breaking an upstairs window.
All four rescuers carried Miss Lock, who was unconscious, downstairs before Miss Robertson put her in the recovery position. It was at that point that firefighters arrived.
The fire, which had been put out by the rescuers, caused damage to the ground floor of the house, including the kitchen and the hallway.
Both Miss Lock and Miss Robertson were treated for smoke inhalation and have since recovered.
Miss Robertson said: “The firefighters told us that we were two minutes away from the whole building going up so it’s lucky we acted when we did.
“The woman is a lovely lady and she has helped us many times so there was no hesitation to smash that window to go and get her out.”
Crew manager David Bowen said that 16 firefighters attended the fire, and that the cause of the fire is being treated as suspicious.
Miss Lock, 47, of Bay Tree Way, Oakridge, Basingstoke, was arrested and charged with arson with intent, and appeared at Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday. She was remanded in custody.
