Basingstoke Youth Movement hosting event to discuss austerity
THE Basingstoke Youth Movement is hosting an event tomorrow to discuss the issue of austerity.
The free event is being held at the Ex-Services Club, in New Road, from 3pm until 6pm. Speakers will include Phil Hedges, Southampton branch officer for Unison; Michelle Gordon, political officer and equality officer for GMB Union southern region; Zoni Asif, the Member of Youth Parliament for Basingstoke, Winchester and Eastleigh; Labour borough councillor Paul Harvey; and James Meadway, a senior economist at the New Economics Foundation.
Daniel O’Loughlin, chair of the Basingstoke Youth Movement, said: “We are hosting an event to bring together young people of Basingstoke to look at austerity locally in our town.
“The guest speakers will help us understand what is going on and what we can do about it, and the event will also highlight the dangerous rise in zero hour contracts for young people in Basingstoke.”
