Time is running out for people to sign up to the Basingstoke Half-Marathon
TIME is running out for entrants who want to get in the running for the third Destination Basingstoke Shire Half-Marathon.
A total of 1,800 people have already signed up to take part in the race on October 6, but there are still places available, with registration open until October 1.
The event, which is listed in the top 10 half-marathon races in the UK by the much-respected Runner’s World publication, will begin at 11am at War Memorial Park , where a host of activities have been organised to keep spectators and participants entertained.
These include face painting, an inflatable assault course and massages for runners before and after the race.
Top Basingstoke athlete Rob Tobin, who was part of Team GB at the Olympics last year, will start the race, and set runners off on a 13-mile route through Cliddesden and Farleigh Wallop.
Felicity Edwards, managing director of Destination Basingstoke, which organises the event, said: “There’s lots of chatter on Facebook about the event and people training.
“We have heard about two new running groups in Basingstoke, the Hatch Warren Runners and Sherfield Park Runners, which are both putting in massive teams. Chineham Park Running Club and Basingstoke and Mid Hants Athletic Club also have teams so there is a huge amount of local support.”
More than 100 volunteers have signed up to help on the day, with marshalling and giving out medals at the end.
And plans are in place for the road closures, which will start at 10am on the day, with the exception of Hackwood Road, which will close at 9am.
Felicity said: “It’s all coming together. The race packs are going out soon and we have taken delivery of the T-shirts.
“The AA signs will also start going up in a couple of weeks.”
