A YOUNG mother suffered serious injuries after a car pinned her against her front door this afternoon.

Eyewitnesses said the 26-year-old woman, flung her young child out of the way before she was crushed against the door of her home in Willoughby Way in the Winklebury area of Basingstoke at 2.45pm.

She was airlifted to Southampton General Hospital and her five-year-old daughter was admitted to Basingstoke hospital with minor injuries.

Police released a statement this evening and said she is in a serious, but stable condition.

A 27-year-old female driver has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and of being unfit through drink or drugs. She is currently in custody.

Neighbour Mark Cowdrey, 47, said the driver of a Honda Civic reached the green gates that mark the entrance to Winklebury Infant School and reversed rapidly.

The vehicle is believed to have smashed into Mr Cowdrey's parked Ford four-wheel drive car and a parked green Ford hatchback, before veering sharply and hitting the front of the house just as the victim was leaving with a child in her arms.

“The car reversed dramatically,” said Mr Cowdrey. “It mounted the pavement as the lady was coming out of her front door with a child in her hand.

“She threw the child out of the way but she took the full impact of the car. She was crushed.”

At the scene, the glass of the front door was shattered, and the back of the Civic, which had a six-year-old boy onboard, was severely crumpled.

Both the driver and her young passenger were uninjured.

Sergeant Barry Long, from Hampshire Constabulary's Whitchurch roads policing unit, said: “We have one person in custody on suspicion of dangerous driving and we are now continuing our investigations to establish the full facts.”
