Basingstoke adventurer James Ketchell is on track in India in global cycle challenge
BASINGSTOKE adventurer James Ketchell is on track to complete his global cycling challenge, having notched up an average of 100 miles a day over the last few weeks.
As previously reported by The Gazette, James set off on his six-month adventure on June 30, and he has already made it across France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Poland, Ukraine, Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey.
He is now tackling India, where he has a 4,000-mile leg to complete, before moving on the South East Asia in September.
In October, he will endeavour to cycle across Australia and New Zealand before flying to America in November.
During the final month of the challenge, in December, he will cycle across Portugal, Spain, France and the UK.
The 31-year-old, of Severn Way, Eastrop, is enjoying the experience so far, despite some challenging conditions.
He said: “I have been faced with extremes of weather and some awful road conditions, but I am really getting into the rhythm now.
“I have already met some fascinating people from all walks of life.
“Most people are incredibly friendly and supportive. That to me is what makes a trip such as this so special and exciting – as well, of course, as raising money for the ELIFAR Foundation, a local charity which is close to my heart.”
James hopes to raise £18,000 for the volunteer-run charity that helps disabled children and young adults.
The organisation is close to James’ heart because of a near-fatal motorbike accident in 2007.
Doctors told him that he would never walk again after he broke both legs, an arm, and badly smashed an ankle.
However, in 2010, he spent 110 days single-handedly rowing 3,000 miles across the Atlantic, and 18 months later, he climbed Everest.
