Stick to your word and leave the Tories

12:30pm Wednesday 19th September 2001

Many of us have noted the letters in the local press from moderate' Conservative members including Parliamentary candidates who stood in Croydon, urging local Tories to back Ken Clarke and not support the right wing rhetoric' of IDS'.

Your paper recently carried a feature where local Tory councillors were quoted as saying they had learnt the mistakes of the William Hague's leadership and supported public services, whilst others in the council chamber have made clear their support of our country playing a leading role within Europe.

So will those moderate Conservatives follow IDS to the far right?

I urge them to join us in the Labour Party and join the fight to make Croydon the city at the heart of South London of which we can all be proud.

Coun Tony Newman

Deputy Leader Croydon Council (Labour)
