Basingstoke MP urging residents to prepare before travelling
GAP year students and other travellers are being advised to prepare well before heading abroad.
Basingstoke MP Maria Miller is urging local students and others to make sure they do not run into trouble by following a few simple guidelines.
The Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport said: “It’s extremely important that Basingstoke residents take time to prepare properly before they travel abroad to ensure they have a safe trip this summer.
“I would strongly recommend that residents take out comprehensive travel insurance and that they do a bit of research about the local laws and customs for the country they are travelling to before they go.”
Every year, Foreign and Commonwealth Office staff see a range of cases ranging from lost and stolen passports to hospitalisations and detentions.
It is recommended that travellers check that travel documents such as passports and insurance are valid and ensure they have all necessary visas.
It is also worth researching the local health risks before travelling.
Mrs Miller added: “If you are a student or young person who has never travelled before, it is particularly important to have a look at travel advice and take these steps as a bare minimum before you travel.”
