YOUNG people in Whitchurch could be asked to represent the views of their generation to the town council.

The issue was raised at Whitchurch Town Council with a view to encouraging young people to participate in politics.

Councillor Allan Vaughan said: “I think we should have a young male and female and help them develop their roles in the community.

“We should go through some sort of process of selection so we attract people to volunteer for the roles.

“I’m very keen to get young people involved in local politics because it’s their future. We have some outstanding young people in Whitchurch and we ought to engage them to get involved in the community and reduce the average age of this council.”

But Cllr Barry Jackman said the council needed to first discuss what would be expected of the young recruits.

He added: “How are they expected to report back and on what?” He also suggested that the council should also have a representative for elderly people.

The council agreed to look into the ideas and come up with a more defined plan.
