Snow warning for Hampshire motorists

HAMPSHIRE police have warned motorists to only travel if necessary after snowfall made driving conditions difficult.

The Met Office issued a severe weather warning for the South East of England earlier this morning, predicting between 2cm and 5cm of snowfall and strong winds.

Earlier, Hampshire Constabulary described driving conditions on the M3 from Fleet towards London as treacherous.

Gritting lorries from Hampshire County Council set out from depots in Hook and Dummer along priority routes around north Hampshire.

Most roads in Basingstoke were passable this morning, with the snow turning to slush on main roads.

The Met Office predicts that the snow, sleet and rain will die out later today, with low temperatures remaining tomorrow.
