New 5k race to launch in Festival Place
12:26pm Wednesday 20th March 2013 in News By Emily Roberts, Chief Reporter
A NEW 5k race is being launched in Basingstoke this summer.
Destination Basingstoke has announced that it will hold the run on June 30 in Festival Place. The course will take participants around the shopping centre, Eastrop Park and Basing View.
Nina Muir, from Destination Basingstoke, which also runs the Basingstoke Half Marathon in October, said: “We hope this will be a shopping trip with a difference. We wanted to use the experience we have gained in organising the half marathon and the enthusiasm from the local running community to create another race which will be achievable even for the casual Sunday morning runner as well as catering for the more serious competitor.”
Steven Connolly, centre director of Festival Place, added: “There was a Festival Place 5k race a couple of years ago, but this time it is an official UK Athletics event, with chip timing and a certified 5k distance so we hope it will appeal both to seasonal runners as well as those just wanting a fun challenge – we hope it is the ultimate Sunday morning experience – a race and then the chance to do some shopping.”
The run is being sponsored by Brackenwood Windows which will enter a team in the event. Others are also involved including The Basingstoke Sports Trust and Reactivate which will provide sports massages for competitors.
Entry is £10 or £8 for UK Athletics affiliated runners.
Participants can enter online at destinationbasingstoke.co.uk up until May 31.
